    About our Khan Younis news

Latest news on Khan Younis (Khan Younis city), a major urban centre in southern Gaza Strip that has been significantly impacted by the ongoing Israel-Hamas war.

Khan Younis, the second-largest urban area in the Gaza Strip after Gaza City, serves as the capital of the Khan Younis Governorate. With a pre-war population of over 205,000, this historic Palestinian city has been at the centre of multiple military operations during the Israel-Hamas war.

The city has witnessed three major battles since December 2023, with the most recent operation concluding in August 2024. Following each military engagement, the city has faced significant infrastructure damage and civilian displacement. The ongoing conflict has severely impacted essential services, including healthcare facilities like the Nasser Hospital, and has led to widespread humanitarian concerns.

The human cost has been substantial, with Palestinian Civil Defence teams reporting hundreds of civilian casualties and thousands missing under rubble. The city's cultural heritage has also suffered, with significant damage to historic sites including the Al Qarara Cultural Museum and parts of the ancient Barquq Castle, a 14th-century caravanserai that gave the city its name.

Founded in 1387 and originally known as "Salqah", Khan Younis grew around a vast caravanserai built by Mamluk emir Yūnus an-Nūrūzī. Throughout its history, the city has been an important regional centre, hosting a significant weekly market that drew traders from across the region. Before recent events, it served as the principal market centre for the southern Gaza Strip.

Our Ðǿմ«Ã½ feed provides continuous updates on developments in Khan Younis, including military operations, humanitarian situation, reconstruction efforts, and impact on civilian life. We source information from reliable local and international news agencies, humanitarian organisations, and official statements to offer comprehensive coverage of this crucial Palestinian city.
