The Creighton Bluejays represent Creighton University, a Jesuit school in Omaha, Nebraska, and play at CHI Health Center Omaha, which opened in 2003 and holds around 18,000 fans. The programme has played since 1911-12 and competes in the Big East Conference, with blue and white colours and Billy Bluejay as its mascot.
Alan Huss, appointed in 2026 as successor to Greg McDermott, takes on a programme known for high-scoring offence and deep NCAA Tournament runs. Under McDermott, Creighton reached the Elite Eight in 2023 and Sweet 16 in 2021 and 2024. In the Big East, every game, ranking and NCAA Tournament seed matters.
Modern college hoops brings challenges. NIL deals, revenue sharing after the House settlement, the transfer portal and the pursuit of top recruits now shape each roster, so off-season movement is closely watched. Creighton must also compete for talent as a smaller-market programme and manage a coaching handover after a long era under one leader.
Basketball is central to Omaha life, and the Bluejays draw large home crowds. The story of Doug McDermott, who played for his father Greg and won national player of the year in 2014, is among the sport's best-loved. Alumni such as Kyle Korver, Ryan Kalkbrenner and Baylor Scheierman have made their mark, while the women's Bluejays add to the university's hoops culture.
The programme's modern rise began in the Missouri Valley Conference under Dana Altman, with Kyle Korver among the stars. Creighton joined the Big East in 2013 and has since become a regular NCAA Tournament team. Earlier coaches such as Eddie Sutton and NBA great Willis Reed also passed through Omaha.
