About our Ohio State Buckeyes Basketball news

Latest news on Ohio State Buckeyes Basketball, covering OSU men's and women's teams, Big Ten play, NCAA tournament, scores, and schedules.

Ohio State Buckeyes Basketball encompasses both the men's and women's teams representing The Ohio State University in NCAA Division I competition as members of the Big Ten Conference. Both programmes play their home games at Value City Arena at the Jerome Schottenstein Center, which opened in 1998 and seats 18,809 for basketball, making it the largest arena in the conference. The men's team has a storied history with one NCAA championship, while the women's programme has emerged as a competitive force in recent seasons.

The men's team is coached by Jake Diebler since March 2024. Diebler, an Ohio native and former Buckeyes video coordinator, represents the first head coach from Ohio in 35 years and inherited a programme seeking to return to NCAA tournament contention after missing the previous three tournaments. The women's team, led by Kevin McGuff in his 13th season, finished the previous campaign with a 26-7 record and an NCAA tournament appearance, building on consistent competitive performances in Big Ten play.

The men's programme boasts rich traditions and passionate fan support, with the student section known as the Buckeye Nuthouse creating an electric atmosphere at home matches. Both teams benefit from recent facility upgrades at the Schottenstein Center, including a redesigned grey hardwood court, new sound system, and enhanced gameday experience features. The venue's campus location and impressive capacity have made it a premier destination for college basketball, hosting not only regular-season and tournament matches but also major concerts and events throughout the year.

Ohio State men's basketball achieved its greatest glory in 1960 when Fred Taylor coached Jerry Lucas, John Havlicek, and Bob Knight to the programme's only national championship, defeating California 75-55. That team began a remarkable run that saw the Buckeyes reach the championship match in both 1961 and 1962, falling to Cincinnati each time. The programme has accumulated 11 Final Four appearances throughout its history, ranking sixth-most in NCAA history, with notable runs including the 2007 team featuring Greg Oden and Mike Conley Jr. that lost to Florida in the championship match. Between 1960 and 1964, Ohio State won five consecutive Big Ten championships, an achievement that remains unmatched.
