    About our Middle East news

Latest news on the Middle East, covering the Iran war, Gaza ceasefire, Israel-Palestine conflict, Syria, Lebanon, Yemen, Gulf states, oil prices, and diplomacy.

The Middle East is a region of immense strategic, cultural, and human significance, encompassing countries from Egypt and Turkey to Iran and the Arabian Peninsula. Home to some of the world's oldest civilisations and its most important energy reserves, the region has long been shaped by the interplay of great-power competition, ethno-religious diversity, and the aspirations of its peoples. Key actors include Israel, Iran, Saudi Arabia, the UAE, Turkey, Egypt, Iraq, Jordan, Qatar, and Syria, while non-state groups such as Hezbollah, Hamas, and Yemen's Houthis exert considerable influence over regional dynamics.

The region entered a dramatic new phase in late February 2026, when the United States and Israel launched joint military strikes on Iran, killing Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei and senior military figures and triggering a full-scale war. Iran retaliated with missile and drone attacks on Israel and Gulf energy infrastructure, while effectively closing the Strait of Hormuz — through which roughly a fifth of global oil passes — to international shipping. Oil prices surged past $100 per barrel, raising fears of a global energy crisis. Hezbollah entered the conflict with missile barrages on Israel, and the Houthis in Yemen have threatened to disrupt Red Sea shipping through the Bab el-Mandeb Strait, though they have so far held back from resuming attacks.

In Gaza, a ceasefire agreed in October 2025 brought an end to the devastating Israel-Hamas war that began after the 7 October 2023 attacks, but progress toward a lasting peace has stalled. Israel continues to occupy over half the territory, Hamas retains its weapons, and hundreds of Palestinians have been killed since the truce took effect. The Iran war has diverted international attention, with Gaza's borders largely closed and negotiations on the next phase of the peace plan — including Hamas disarmament and Israeli withdrawal — suspended. Humanitarian conditions remain dire, with severe shortages of medicine, clean water, and shelter affecting Gaza's two million residents.

Syria's post-Assad transition offers a contrasting narrative of cautious progress amid fragility. Since the fall of Bashar al-Assad's regime in December 2024, interim president Ahmed al-Sharaa has pursued political reform, sanctions relief, and a deal with the Kurdish-led Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) on integration into state institutions. Kurdish cultural and citizenship rights have been formally recognised. Yet the country faces enormous challenges, including ISIS remnants, sectarian tensions, Israeli military operations in the south, Turkish influence in the north, and the economic devastation of over a decade of civil war. Over 4.5 million Syrian refugees remain abroad, while millions more are internally displaced.

Across the wider region, the war has reshaped the diplomatic landscape. Saudi Arabia, a pivotal player, has repeatedly conditioned normalisation with Israel through the Abraham Accords on a clear path to Palestinian statehood and a two-state solution — a position that has hardened since the Gaza conflict. The Gulf states, including the UAE, Qatar, and Bahrain, find themselves caught between security cooperation with Israel and deep public opposition to the war. The disruption to oil and gas shipping through the Strait of Hormuz and the Red Sea has global economic implications, with OPEC dynamics, energy security, and the threat of a fertiliser crisis affecting food supplies worldwide. Iraq, Jordan, and Egypt each face spillover pressures, from refugee flows to economic instability.

The Middle East's modern conflicts are rooted in a complex history — from the Ottoman Empire's collapse and European colonial mandates, through the creation of Israel in 1948 and successive Arab-Israeli wars, to the Iranian Revolution, the Iran-Iraq war, and the upheavals of the Arab Spring. These legacies continue to shape borders, alliances, and grievances. The region's extraordinary cultural heritage, from the ancient cities of Mesopotamia and the Levant to the holy sites of Jerusalem, Mecca, and Medina, exists alongside profound humanitarian challenges, including displacement, poverty, and restrictions on civil liberties.

With events moving rapidly and consequences rippling across the globe, staying informed about the Middle East has rarely been more important. The Ðǿմ«Ã½ Middle East feed brings together coverage from a wide range of reliable sources, providing comprehensive and up-to-date reporting on the Iran war, Gaza, Syria, the Gulf, the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, energy markets, diplomacy, and the human stories behind the headlines.
