    About our Latin America news

Latest news on Latin America covering politics, economy, environment, culture, and social movements across Brazil, Mexico, Argentina and the region's 33 nations.

Home to over 660 million people across 33 countries and dependencies, Latin America spans from Mexico through Central America to the southern tip of South America. Brazil is the region's most populous nation with approximately 212 million people, followed by Mexico with around 131 million. The region's major urban centres include São Paulo, Mexico City, Buenos Aires and Rio de Janeiro.

Economic growth in Latin America has remained modest, with GDP expansion projected around 2.2-2.5 per cent, though inflation has declined significantly from recent highs. Political shifts across the region have brought conservative governments to power in several nations including Argentina, Ecuador, El Salvador and Chile, while left-leaning administrations continue in Brazil, Mexico and Colombia. Climate change impacts have intensified, with severe drought affecting the Amazon and causing widespread fires across Bolivia, Brazil and Peru.

The region's cultural influence continues to expand globally, with Latin music generating substantial revenues internationally and artists like Bad Bunny, Karol G and Peso Pluma achieving worldwide recognition. Brazilian cinema achieved historic recognition when "I'm Still Here" won the Oscar for Best International Feature Film. Literature from authors such as Fernanda Melchor and Mariana Enríquez has gained international followings, while podcasts and streaming content from Latin America reach audiences across continents.

Environmental challenges remain pressing, particularly in the Amazon rainforest where deforestation has shown mixed trends. While Brazil reported a 30 per cent reduction in deforestation rates under President Lula da Silva's policies, forest degradation from fires surged dramatically during severe drought conditions. The region faces ongoing struggles with organised crime affecting Indigenous communities, illegal mining operations and trafficking networks that threaten both ecosystems and local populations.
