Poland is a Central European country of about 38 million people, and a member of NATO since 1999 and the EU since 2004. Warsaw is the capital, joined by big cities such as Krakow, Lodz, Wroclaw, Poznan, Gdansk and Szczecin. It is the largest economy in central and eastern Europe and keeps its own currency, the zloty.
Prime Minister Donald Tusk leads a centrist coalition, while President Karol Nawrocki, backed by the conservative Law and Justice party, can veto its bills. This shared power has led to repeated clashes over judicial reform, abortion, civil partnerships and EU policy. Relations with Brussels have improved since the rule-of-law dispute, and the next parliamentary election will test the balance.
Security dominates the agenda. Poland is a leading supporter of Ukraine and hosts a large Ukrainian community, and it spends one of the highest shares of national income on defence in NATO. Russian drones entered Polish airspace in September 2025, prompting NATO reinforcements on the eastern flank. Pressure on the Belarus border led to a suspension of asylum applications, which rights groups and the UN refugee agency criticise.
Economic growth has been among the strongest in the EU, helped by EU funds, exports and consumer spending. Debates cover inflation, the budget deficit, energy prices, coal, nuclear power and whether to adopt the euro. Polish culture runs from Catholic traditions and Christmas Eve customs to Chopin, Copernicus and Marie Sklodowska-Curie, with Krakow and Gdansk drawing visitors to their historic centres.
The Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth was partitioned by its neighbours in the 18th century, and Poland regained independence in 1918. It suffered occupation and the Holocaust in the Second World War, then decades of communist rule. The Solidarity movement, born in Gdansk in 1980 under Lech Walesa, helped bring about the democratic changes of 1989.
