    About our Kais Saied news

Latest news on Kais Saied, a Tunisian politician, jurist, and retired law professor who is the President of Tunisia since October 2019. He won the 2019 presidential election as an independent social conservative with support from across the political spectrum. Saied campaigned on a populist platform and pledged to combat corruption and improve the electoral system. He dismissed the parliament and Prime Minister Hichem Mechichi in July 2021, and since then, he has overseen the dismissal of judiciary and arrest of politicians. He ruled by decree until passing a new constitution which granted him more powers and called for snap legislative elections that resulted in a record low turnout. In February 2023, Saied made controversial comments about African immigration into Tunisia, stating that it was changing the country's demographic makeup and making it a purely African nation.
