    About our North Carolina News

Latest news on North Carolina, covering politics, weather, economy, education, crime, and key developments across the Tar Heel State, NC.

Home to more than 10.7 million people, North Carolina is one of the fastest-growing states in the US, stretching from the Appalachian Mountains to the Atlantic coast. The state encompasses major cities including Charlotte, Raleigh, Greensboro, Durham, and Winston-Salem, with the Research Triangle region serving as a global hub for technology, life sciences, and higher education. Governor Josh Stein, a Democrat, leads a state whose General Assembly is dominated by Republicans, creating frequent political tension and high-profile legislative battles.

North Carolina's political landscape has been marked by sharp clashes between the governor and the legislature. Stein has vetoed numerous bills on topics including immigration enforcement, gun laws, and gender-affirming care — with lawmakers overriding several of those vetoes. From 1 January 2026, the state officially recognises only two biological sexes in law, a measure Stein opposed, while income tax dropped to 3.99 per cent, its fifth consecutive annual reduction. New pharmaceutical transparency laws also came into force, requiring drug makers to report significant price increases.

On the economic front, North Carolina was named 2025 State of the Year for economic development, with a record 34,000-plus announced job commitments and more than $24 billion in capital investment from new and expanding companies. Major projects include JetZero's aircraft manufacturing facility in Greensboro and Genentech's expansion in Wake County. The state has consistently ranked among the top US states for business, reflecting strengths in advanced manufacturing, aerospace, life sciences, and defence, including assets around Fort Bragg (now Fort Liberty) and the Research Triangle.

Environmental concerns remain prominent, particularly PFAS contamination — so-called "forever chemicals" — linked to discharges from the Chemours Fayetteville Works plant into the Cape Fear River, a crisis that has drawn sustained attention since 2017. Community groups and legal challenges continue to push for tougher federal oversight. In late 2025, Congress granted federal recognition to the Lumbee Tribe of North Carolina, a milestone decades in the making for one of the largest Native American groups in the eastern US.

North Carolina's history reflects the broader sweep of American life — from its colonial origins and pivotal Civil War battles to its role in the civil rights movement and the pioneering aviation work of the Wright Brothers at Kitty Hawk. The state's geography shapes its diversity: the mountain communities of the west, rural agricultural heartlands, and the thriving coastal and urban corridors of the east each face distinct challenges. Recovery from Hurricane Helene's devastating impact on western NC in autumn 2024 has remained a live issue for affected communities and state agencies.

Whether you're following Raleigh politics, environmental disputes, economic development, or community stories from Asheville to Wilmington, our Ðǿմ«Ã½ feed on North Carolina delivers the latest headlines from across the state, keeping you informed on every development that matters.
