Montana is considered a red state, meaning that it tends to vote for Republican candidates in national and state elections. However, it has also shown some independent streaks and willingness to support Democrats or third-party candidates in certain races. Montana also has a history of populist and progressive movements that have influenced its politics and policies. Montana is represented by two U.S. Senators and two U.S. Representatives in the federal government. Both Senators are Republicans: Steve Daines and John Tester. Of the two Representatives, one is a Republican, Matt Rosendale, and one is a Democrat, Ryan Zinke. Montana also has a Republican governor, Greg Gianforte, who was elected in 2020. The state legislature is also controlled by Republicans, who have majorities in both chambers.
