The town of Sandy Hook is most notable for being the site of the Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting, which took place on December 14, 2012. The shooting, which claimed the lives of 20 children and 6 adults, is the deadliest mass shooting at an elementary school in U.S. history.
In the wake of the shooting, Sandy Hook Elementary School was closed and demolished. A new Sandy Hook Elementary School was built in its place and opened in 2016.
