California is considered a strong blue state. In the federal government, California is represented by two U.S. Senators and fifty-two U.S. Representatives. Both Senators are Democrats: Laphonza Butler and Alex Padilla. Of the fifty-two Representatives, forty are Democrats, whilst twelve are Republican. California also has a Democrat governor, Gavin Newsom, who was reelected in 2022. The state legislature is also controlled by Democrats, who have majorities in both chambers.
