The West Virginia Mountaineers, often shortened to WVU, represent West Virginia University in Morgantown. They play at Hope Coliseum, formerly the WVU Coliseum, which opened in 1970 and holds around 14,000 fans. The programme has played since 1903-04 and competes in the Big 12 Conference, with old gold and blue colours and the Mountaineer mascot.
Ross Hodge, appointed in 2025 after a spell at North Texas, is the latest coach to lead West Virginia in the Big 12. The Mountaineers are known for gritty, physical defence, famously branded "Press Virginia" during the Bob Huggins years and the Jevon Carter era. In a deep conference, every game, ranking and NCAA Tournament seed matters.
Modern college hoops brings challenges. NIL deals, revenue sharing after the House settlement, the transfer portal and the pursuit of top recruits now shape each roster, so off-season movement is closely watched. West Virginia has also seen frequent coaching change, including Bob Huggins' resignation in 2023 following an arrest, and must compete for talent as a smaller-market programme.
Basketball is part of life in the Mountain State. The Mountaineer Maniacs student section and the singing of "Take Me Home, Country Roads" give the arena a unique atmosphere, while the women's Mountaineers add to the state's hoops culture. Alumni such as Jerry West, Rod Thorn, Hot Rod Hundley, Jevon Carter and Da'Sean Butler have made their mark in college and the NBA.
West Virginia reached the 1959 national championship game with Jerry West, losing to California by a single point, and the 2010 Final Four under Bob Huggins with Da'Sean Butler. The 2005 Elite Eight run, led by Kevin Pittsnogle under John Beilein, remains a cherished memory. The school moved through the Southern Conference, Atlantic 10 and Big East before joining the Big 12 in 2012.
