    About our TikTok news

Latest news on TikTok, covering the social media platform, ByteDance, short-form videos, content creators, influencers, trends, and regulatory challenges.

TikTok is a short-form video social media platform that has transformed global digital culture since its international launch in 2017. With approximately 1.6 billion monthly active users worldwide as of early 2026, the platform enables users to create, share and discover videos ranging from 15 seconds to 10 minutes in length. Content spans entertainment, education, comedy, dance, beauty tutorials, cooking demonstrations, and countless other categories that have made TikTok one of the most influential social networks globally.

In January 2026, TikTok completed a major ownership restructuring following years of regulatory pressure. The platform established TikTok USDS Joint Venture LLC, with American investors Oracle, Silver Lake, and Abu Dhabi-based MGX collectively holding 45 per cent of the United States entity, while parent company ByteDance retains approximately 20 per cent. This arrangement addresses national security concerns that led to Congressional legislation in 2024 requiring divestment from Chinese ownership. The new structure includes safeguards for data protection, algorithm security, and content moderation specifically for the platform's more than 170 million American users.

Users worldwide spend an average of 95 minutes daily on TikTok, demonstrating the platform's exceptional engagement levels. The app's sophisticated recommendation algorithm, which curates personalised content feeds through the "For You" page, has proven remarkably effective at matching users with videos aligned to their interests. TikTok Shop, the platform's integrated e-commerce feature, generated over 500 million dollars during the Black Friday and Cyber Monday period in 2025, whilst TikTok's overall advertising revenue reached billions annually. The platform has become particularly influential among younger demographics, with nearly 40 per cent of Generation Z users preferring TikTok over traditional search engines for certain queries.

TikTok's origins trace to ByteDance's September 2016 launch of Douyin in China, which attracted 100 million users within its first year. ByteDance subsequently released TikTok internationally in September 2017 and acquired the popular lip-syncing app Musical.ly for approximately one billion dollars in November 2017. The merger of Musical.ly with TikTok in August 2018 combined user bases from different markets and catalysed the platform's explosive global growth. Notable creators including Charli D'Amelio, Khaby Lame, and countless others have built massive followings, whilst the platform has significantly influenced music industry trends, helping artists like Lil Nas X achieve mainstream success with viral songs.

The platform faces ongoing challenges around data privacy, content moderation, and algorithm transparency. Concerns about potential access to user data by foreign governments led to intense scrutiny from lawmakers in multiple countries, culminating in the 2024 United States legislation mandating ownership changes. TikTok experienced a brief shutdown in January 2025 before the Trump administration negotiated extensions to facilitate the eventual sale agreement. Updates to the platform's Terms of Service in January 2026 prompted user concerns regarding expanded data collection, including location tracking and citizenship information, highlighting persistent tensions between platform functionality and user privacy expectations.
