The country consists of two main landmasses—the North Island (Te Ika-a-Māui) and the South Island (Te Waipounamu)—and around 700 smaller islands. The South Island is largely dominated by the Southern Alps while a volcanic plateau covers much of the North Island. New Zealand's capital is Wellington, while its most populous city is Auckland.
