    About our Meta's LLaMA News

Latest news on Meta LLaMA AI models, covering Llama 4, Llama 3, open-source development, multimodal capabilities and Meta AI integration.

LLaMA (Large Language Model Meta AI) represents Meta's pioneering approach to open-weight artificial intelligence, launched in February 2023 as an alternative to proprietary models from OpenAI and Google. The family has achieved extraordinary adoption with over 650 million downloads since inception—averaging one million downloads daily. Unlike competitors maintaining closed systems, Meta releases LLaMA models with publicly accessible weights, enabling researchers, developers and enterprises to download, modify and deploy the models without requiring API access or ongoing subscription fees, though commercial use over 700 million monthly users requires special licensing from Meta.

Llama 4, released on 5 April 2025, marked a fundamental architectural shift to mixture-of-experts design with native multimodal capabilities spanning text, images, audio and video. The series includes Llama 4 Scout featuring 17 billion active parameters across 16 experts with a 10-million-token context window, and Llama 4 Maverick with 17 billion active parameters across 128 experts and 400 billion total parameters. Meta also announced Llama 4 Behemoth—a massive 288 billion active parameter model still under training—from which Maverick was distilled. These models achieve competitive performance against proprietary alternatives whilst maintaining significantly lower inference costs, with Maverick estimated at $0.19-$0.49 per million tokens compared to higher pricing from closed competitors.

The Llama 3 generation, released throughout 2024, established new benchmarks for open models with versions spanning 8B, 70B and the frontier-scale 405B parameters—amongst the largest open-weight models ever published. Llama 3.1 introduced extended 128,000-token context windows and improved multilingual support, whilst Llama 3.2 brought lightweight models optimised for edge devices and multimodal vision capabilities. Llama 3.3 70B, released in December 2024, delivered performance comparable to the much larger 405B model at substantially reduced serving costs. Meta's aggressive release cadence and continuous improvements have positioned LLaMA as the industry's most-adopted open model family, powering countless applications from academic research to commercial deployments.

LLaMA integration permeates Meta's product ecosystem, powering Meta AI assistants across WhatsApp, Instagram, Facebook and Messenger, serving hundreds of millions of users with conversational capabilities, image generation through the Emu model, and AI Studio enabling creators to build custom AI characters. Ray-Ban Meta smart glasses utilise custom LLaMA models for hands-free assistance, whilst Advantage+ advertising tools leverage the technology for automated creative generation. Meta positions LLaMA as foundational to its vision of voice-based AI experiences, with forthcoming releases emphasising speech and reasoning capabilities. The company provides comprehensive safety tooling including Llama Guard for content moderation, Prompt Guard against injection attacks, and Code Shield for secure code generation, alongside partnerships with AWS, Google Cloud and Microsoft Azure for managed hosting.
