About our Zimbabwe / Zim news

Latest news on Zimbabwe, covering politics, economy, gold and lithium mining, ZiG currency, ZANU-PF, Mnangagwa, elections, human rights, Harare, and Bulawayo.

Zimbabwe is a landlocked southern African nation of over 17 million people, with its capital Harare and second city Bulawayo serving as the country's political and economic centres. Rich in natural resources including gold, platinum, chrome, diamonds, and lithium, the mining sector generates over 60 per cent of export earnings and underpins the broader economy. Zimbabwe holds Africa's largest lithium reserves, making it a key player in the global energy transition, while gold production alone accounts for roughly half of all export revenue.

The country's political landscape remains dominated by the ruling Zimbabwe African National Union – Patriotic Front (ZANU-PF), led by President Emmerson Mnangagwa, who took power following a military-assisted transition in 2017 that ended Robert Mugabe's nearly four-decade rule. A controversial Constitutional Amendment Bill, gazetted in February 2026, proposes extending presidential and parliamentary terms from five to seven years — a move critics say is designed to keep Mnangagwa in power until 2030 without facing elections. The amendment has drawn opposition from civil society, legal groups, and human rights organisations, with reports of violence and intimidation against those who oppose it.

Zimbabwe's opposition remains fragmented. Nelson Chamisa, formerly leader of the Citizens Coalition for Change (CCC), left the party in early 2024 citing infiltration by ruling-party agents, and has since launched a new initiative called Agenda 2026. Other opposition figures, including Jameson Timba through the Defend the Constitution Platform, have sought to coordinate resistance to the proposed constitutional changes, though internal divisions continue to weaken the broader movement.

Economically, Zimbabwe has long grappled with currency instability and inflation, rooted in the hyperinflation crisis of 2007–2009 that rendered the original Zimbabwe dollar worthless. The gold-backed Zimbabwe Gold (ZiG), introduced in April 2024, is the country's sixth currency experiment since 2008. Annual inflation fell to single digits for the first time in nearly three decades in early 2026, and the Reserve Bank of Zimbabwe has introduced redesigned higher-denomination banknotes. However, the US dollar remains the dominant medium of exchange, and the ZiG's long-term viability depends on sustained fiscal discipline and public trust. Chronic electricity shortages, high unemployment, and food insecurity — exacerbated by recurring droughts — continue to constrain economic growth.

Beyond politics and economics, Zimbabwe boasts a rich cultural heritage stretching back to the ancient stone ruins of Great Zimbabwe, which gave the country its name. Victoria Falls, one of the world's largest waterfalls and a UNESCO World Heritage Site shared with Zambia, remains a major draw for international tourism. The country's tobacco sector supports over 135,000 farming households, while a vibrant arts and music scene — from mbira traditions to contemporary genres — reflects the creativity of its predominantly young population. The Zimbabwean diaspora, spread across South Africa, the United Kingdom, and beyond, plays a significant role in sustaining families through remittances and keeping the country's global profile alive.
