    About our Mali news

Latest news on Mali, covering security, politics, humanitarian crisis, JNIM insurgency, Bamako, Timbuktu, and developments in this West African nation.

Mali, a landlocked West African nation of approximately 26 million people, faces a complex humanitarian and security crisis. The capital Bamako, home to over 3 million residents, serves as the political and economic centre of this vast country that spans over 1.24 million square kilometres.

Since military coups in 2020 and 2021 brought General Assimi Goïta to power, Mali has experienced profound political shifts. All political parties were dissolved in 2025, and elections have been indefinitely postponed. The country left ECOWAS and formed the Confederation of Sahel States with Burkina Faso and Niger. A severe insurgency by JNIM, an Al-Qaeda-affiliated group, has intensified since 2025, with fuel blockades affecting Bamako and attacks on supply routes causing widespread shortages.

The humanitarian situation remains dire, with thousands of Malians fleeing to neighbouring countries, particularly Mauritania. More than 7,500 people crossed into Mauritania in late 2025 alone, joining over 300,000 refugees who have sought safety there. International organisations continue providing essential assistance to internally displaced persons and affected communities across the country.

Mali's rich cultural heritage centres on Timbuktu, once a flourishing centre of Islamic scholarship and trans-Saharan trade during the Mali Empire's golden age in the 14th and 15th centuries. The city's ancient mosques, including Djinguereber and Sankore, and its vast collection of medieval manuscripts represent invaluable contributions to world heritage. However, this heritage faces ongoing threats from armed conflict and desertification.

Our Ðǿմ«Ã½ feed on Mali provides comprehensive, constantly updated coverage from reliable sources, delivering the latest developments on security, politics, humanitarian issues, and cultural matters. Whether you're monitoring the situation, conducting research, or maintaining connections to the region, this feed ensures you stay informed about all significant news affecting Mali and its people.
