Liberia operates as a presidential republic, with a president as the head of state. The inauguration of George Weah as president in 2018 marked Liberia's first fully democratic transition in 74 years. The country is divided into 15 counties, with Monrovia serving as its capital and largest city. Liberia's economy is very underdeveloped with the official estimate for Liberia's GDP being only $8 billion at the end of 2022, and over 50% of the population under the poverty line.
