The Mets are a Major League Baseball (MLB) club based in New York (NY or N.Y.), in the borough of Queens. They play in the National League (NL) division known as the NL East. Their colours are blue and orange, chosen to honour the Dodgers and Giants, the two National League clubs New York lost in the 1950s.
Mets coverage often turns on pitching, big-name signings, injuries and the pressure of sharing a city with the Yankees. Fans are known for loyalty through lean years and for fierce rivalries with the Braves and Phillies.
Citi Field in Flushing opened in 2009, with a giant home run apple that rises when the Mets go deep. Mr. Met is among sport's best-loved mascots. The club previously played at Shea Stadium, beside the site of today's ballpark.
The Mets were founded in 1962 and began at the Polo Grounds. Early teams were famously poor, but the Miracle Mets won the World Series in 1969, and the team won again in 1986. Hall of Famers include Tom Seaver and Mike Piazza. The Subway Series against the Yankees, which reached the World Series in 2000, remains a city-wide obsession.
