    About our Delcy Rodríguez news

Latest news on Delcy Rodríguez, acting president succeeding Nicolás Maduro, politician, diplomat, lawyer, oil minister, Chavista.

Delcy Eloína Rodríguez Gómez is a Venezuelan lawyer, diplomat and politician who serves as acting president of Venezuela. Born on 18 May 1969 in Caracas, she assumed the presidency following a US military operation that resulted in the capture of President Nicolás Maduro on 3 January 2026. Venezuela's Supreme Court ordered Rodríguez to take on presidential powers under constitutional provisions for presidential absence.

Rodríguez has risen through Venezuela's political ranks over more than two decades, becoming one of the most prominent figures in the Chavista movement. She served as minister of communication and information from 2013 to 2014, before becoming Venezuela's first female foreign minister from 2014 to 2017. She was appointed vice president in 2018, a position she held alongside her roles as minister of finance and minister of petroleum, making her one of the most powerful figures in Maduro's government.

Her political career has been shaped by her family's revolutionary heritage. She is the daughter of Jorge Antonio Rodríguez, a founder of the Socialist League who died in custody in 1976 following his involvement in guerrilla activities. Her brother, Jorge Rodríguez, serves as president of Venezuela's National Assembly, making the siblings a powerful political duo within the government structure.

Rodríguez has faced international sanctions from the European Union, United States, Canada and Switzerland for her role in Venezuela's political crisis. In 2020, she became embroiled in the "Delcygate" scandal when she made a controversial visit to Madrid's airport despite EU travel bans, during which she allegedly facilitated discussions about Venezuelan gold transactions. The incident strained relations between Spain and Venezuela and raised questions about European enforcement of sanctions.

As minister of petroleum and finance, Rodríguez managed Venezuela's crucial oil industry during a period of intense US sanctions and economic challenges. She worked to maintain energy partnerships with countries including China, India and Vietnam, and has been credited with helping to stabilise Venezuela's economy after years of hyperinflation. Her fluency in English and French has aided her diplomatic negotiations and made her an effective international representative for the Venezuelan government.
