    About our Austria news

Latest news on Austria, covering politics, economy, Vienna, Salzburg, Alps, tourism, culture, Chancellor Stocker, FPÖ, ÖVP, SPÖ and Austrian affairs.

Austria, a landlocked republic of nine million people at the heart of Europe, occupies a strategic position between Western and Eastern Europe. Its capital, Vienna, is one of the continent's most visited cities, renowned for imperial architecture, classical music, and a thriving congress sector. Other major cities include Graz, Salzburg — birthplace of Mozart — and Linz, while the country's Alpine regions draw millions of skiers and outdoor enthusiasts each year.

Austrian politics has undergone significant turbulence in recent years. The far-right Freedom Party (FPÖ) won the most votes in the September 2024 parliamentary elections, but failed to form a government after coalition talks collapsed. In March 2025, Austria's first three-party coalition since the late 1940s was sworn in, led by Chancellor Christian Stocker of the Austrian People's Party (ÖVP), with SPÖ leader Andreas Babler as Vice Chancellor and NEOS leader Beate Meinl-Reisinger as foreign minister. The government is navigating a packed legislative agenda including fiscal consolidation, migration reform, justice reform, and a long-delayed climate law.

Economically, Austria has faced a difficult stretch, with GDP contracting for two consecutive years before a modest recovery began in 2025. High energy prices, rising labour costs, and subdued industrial output have weighed on competitiveness, and the European Commission opened an Excessive Deficit Procedure against Austria in 2025. Modest growth is expected to gather pace through 2026 and 2027, supported by recovering private consumption, easing inflation, and a rebound in export demand from key partners in Germany and Central Europe.

Vienna is experiencing a tourism boom, surpassing 20 million overnight stays in 2025 for the first time on record. The city is the focal point of Austria's cultural calendar, hosting the 70th Eurovision Song Contest at the Wiener Stadthalle in May 2026 — the third time Austria has hosted the event. Austria's musical heritage, from Beethoven and Brahms to the Vienna Philharmonic and the Vienna State Opera, gives the country an enduring global profile, while its Alpine landscapes, coffee house culture, and Viennese cuisine remain powerful draws for visitors worldwide.

Austria's history is inseparable from its role as the centre of the Habsburg Empire, which for centuries shaped the culture, architecture, and ethnic diversity of Central Europe. The collapse of that empire after the First World War led to the small republic that exists today. The country's 20th century was marked by the trauma of annexation by Nazi Germany, followed by postwar reconstruction and eventual EU membership in 1995. Austria today is a federal parliamentary republic and a founding member of the eurozone, though its political debates — particularly around migration, sovereignty, and media independence — reflect wider tensions across Europe.
