About our South Africa Election news

Latest news on Elections in South Africa, covering national and provincial polls, the ANC, DA, EFF, MK Party, IEC, and democratic developments.

South Africa holds national and provincial elections every five years under a proportional representation system managed by the Independent Electoral Commission. Citizens aged 18 and over elect members to the 400-seat National Assembly and nine provincial legislatures, with parties receiving seats proportionate to their vote share.

The most recent general election on 29 May 2024 marked a watershed moment in South African democracy. The African National Congress lost its parliamentary majority for the first time since 1994, securing only 40% of the vote. The Democratic Alliance came second with 22%, whilst the newly formed uMkhonto we Sizwe Party, led by former president Jacob Zuma, captured nearly 15%. This result ended three decades of single-party dominance and necessitated coalition negotiations.

Following the election, President Cyril Ramaphosa formed a Government of National Unity comprising ten political parties, including the ANC, DA, Inkatha Freedom Party, and smaller parties. This coalition represents 273 seats in the National Assembly and governs eight of nine provinces. The arrangement echoes South Africa's first post-apartheid government in 1994, though today's coalition reflects deep policy differences and requires consensus-building across ideological divides.

South African elections carry profound historical significance, representing the realisation of the anti-apartheid struggle and universal suffrage. The 2024 contest saw record registration of 27.7 million voters, though turnout reached only 59%, the lowest since democracy began. Electoral debates centre on unemployment, corruption, service delivery failures, and economic inequality, with voters increasingly expressing dissatisfaction through support for opposition parties and new political formations.

Stay informed about South African electoral developments, coalition negotiations, policy debates, and democratic accountability through our comprehensive Ðǿմ«Ã½ feed. We provide up-to-date coverage from reliable sources, ensuring you have access to the latest news on elections, political parties, government formation, and the evolving landscape of South African democracy.
