About our Olympique de Marseille news
Latest news on Olympique de Marseille (OM), covering Ligue 1 fixtures, transfer news, European campaigns, and developments at the Stade Vélodrome.
Olympique de Marseille, widely known as OM, is one of the most successful and passionately supported clubs in French football. Founded in 1899, the club has won nine top-flight titles and remains the only French side to lift the UEFA Champions League, a feat achieved in 1993. Its motto, 'Droit au But', meaning 'Straight to the Goal', reflects an attacking identity cherished by supporters.
Under the ownership of American businessman Frank McCourt since 2016, Marseille have pursued a return to the summit of the French game. The club regularly challenges for European qualification while navigating financial regulations, managerial changes, and an intense transfer market. Player recruitment and departures at the Vélodrome remain a constant source of headlines each window.
Few fixtures in world football match the intensity of Le Classique, Marseille's fierce rivalry with Paris Saint-Germain. The Stade Vélodrome, with a capacity of more than 67,000, generates one of the most electric atmospheres in Europe. OM's ultras groups are renowned for their choreography, noise, and unwavering loyalty, making home matches a spectacle in their own right.
The club's history features iconic figures such as Jean-Pierre Papin, Didier Deschamps, Basile Boli, and Didier Drogba. The glory of the 1993 European triumph was followed by a match-fixing scandal that saw the club stripped of its domestic title and relegated, a turbulent chapter that shaped its modern identity. That mix of triumph and turmoil is central to the OM story.
Marseille also carries deep social significance in France's second city, where football is woven into local culture and community life. The club draws support across generations and communities, and its fortunes are felt throughout the city and beyond.
