FIFA, the Fédération Internationale de Football Association, is the governing body for association football worldwide, based in Zurich, Switzerland. It oversees 211 member associations organised into six continental confederations, covering Europe, South America, North and Central America, Africa, Asia and Oceania. Alongside the men's World Cup, FIFA runs the Women's World Cup, the Club World Cup, youth tournaments, and futsal and beach football competitions. Gianni Infantino has served as FIFA president since 2016, overseeing a period of significant revenue growth and tournament expansion.
FIFA's most prominent current initiative is the men's World Cup, expanded to 48 teams and shared across three host nations for the first time. The organisation has also introduced a larger 32-team Club World Cup, moving from an annual format to a quadrennial tournament resembling the World Cup itself. Technology now plays a bigger role too, with the Video Assistant Referee and semi-automated offside systems standard features of FIFA's major tournaments. FIFA's decision to award the 2034 World Cup to Saudi Arabia, a country with a contested human rights record, has prompted sustained criticism from campaign groups over labour conditions and civil liberties.
Football's global reach means FIFA tournaments carry huge cultural weight, drawing supporters from across the world to celebrate shared identity through the game. The Women's World Cup continues to grow in profile and participation, with Brazil set to host the 2027 edition as the first in South America. FIFA also channels solidarity payments and development funding to member associations, supporting grassroots football, infrastructure and coaching programmes in developing football nations. Fan culture around FIFA tournaments, from national colours and chants to matchday rituals, remains one of the sport's most visible expressions of community and belonging.
FIFA was founded in Paris in 1904 to oversee international football, and it organised its first World Cup in Uruguay in 1930. The organisation has grown from a small European association into a global institution overseeing billions of pounds in annual revenue. Its reputation was badly damaged by a 2015 corruption scandal involving bribery and fraud allegations, which led to the resignation of the then FIFA president, Sepp Blatter. Reforms since then, including changes to leadership terms and financial oversight, have aimed to restore trust while FIFA has continued to expand its competitions and commercial reach.
As FIFA continues to expand its competitions, adjust its governance and navigate political and human rights debates, staying informed remains essential for anyone following the sport.
