Based in Los Angeles, the LA Lakers are considered one of the most successful teams in basketball history. Established in 1946 the Lakers were initially known as the Detroit Gems and played their first ever season as a professional basketball team in the NBL. After just one year as the Gems, the team were relocated to Minneapolis where they were renamed the Minneapolis Lakers.
Over the next 12 seasons the Lakers established themselves as one of the best teams in basketball. The side won multiple titles including the first ever season of the National Basketball Association (NBA). This period of success came before the side suffered financial difficulties which saw the team relocated from Minneapolis to Los Angeles where they were given the new name the LA Lakers.
Since their move to the west coast the Lakers have become one of the most iconic teams in NBA history. Playing in purple, gold and black the Lakers have won 17 NBA titles with the most recent coming in 2020. Legendary players such as Kobe Bryant, Magic Johnson and LeBron James have all starred for the LA based side, bringing success to the Staples Center while setting numerous league records.
