The team was founded in 2007 and began playing in the MLS in 2009. The Sounders are owned by Adrian Hanauer and minority owners Paul Allen, Drew Carey, and 14 families from the Seattle area. The Sounders have rivalries with other Pacific Northwest clubs, such as the Portland Timbers and Vancouver Whitecaps FC, and compete with them for the Cascadia Cup.
